WYRE ARCHAEOLOGY

Wyre Archaeology in conjunction with St Michael's Primary School, Garstang are continuing the search for the Roman road through Garstang.  To celebrate our first discovery and to continue the search across the school grounds a special signpost is going to be erected showing distances to other Roman sites.  This will take place on 22nd September in the school grounds.

Welcome to the Wyre Archaeology website. We are an amateur archaeology group, with some professional members, interested in all possible sites in Wyre, Fylde and beyond.  Browse around and you will find information on our past and present digs, areas of interest, etc.  Meetings take place at Great Eccleston Village centre and are on the 3rd Wednesday every month from February to October. Guest speakers have included Fraser Brown of Oxford Archaeology North whose talk, 'At the waters' edge: when agriculture reached the North-West' presented the most up-to-date results from the Windy Harbour-Skippool Excavation, putting the Mesolithic and early Neolithic evidence in its wider north-western context. Andy Binley, a WA member and Professor of Hydrogeophysics at Lancaster University, presented a talk on "Recent archaeological discoveries at Lancaster’s Castle Hill using geophysics”.  One of the GPR findings included the discovery of a potential Roman Temple in Quay Meadow - just North of the Castle.

Recent digs have included a search for a Roman mosaic at Cockerham and a Roman bridge (not too far) at Ribchester. We also have a 'dig school' by the River Brock at Claughton. Being a member of the Facebook group does not mean that you are automatically a member of Wyre Archaeology.  If you want to come to meetings or take part in digs then you should join as a full member.  Single Membership costs £12, or £18 for 2 at the same address, for a full year from 1 May to 30 April. We accept pro-rata subscriptions for part of the year and students in full-time education aged 21 or under are free. Subscriptions pay for equipment, insurance and room hire.
