October 1662

Great Court held on the 4th October, 1662 before William Bannester (Mayor), Thomas Hodgkinson and John Kellett (Bailiffs), and Edward Rigby (Steward of the Court).

1. That Abell Mosse shall before the seacond of February next repayre his Cawsey going downe to the house of Correccon upon payne to forfeit 6s 8d.

2. The supervisors of the highwaies for they haveing timely notice of the decay of the Eastway goeing downe to the marsh from the house of correccon yet notwithstanding it is out of repayre and not passable these Wee fine the said supervisors for theire neglect xs. And the said way shal be put into repayre before ye 25th ____

3. That those psons following being free Burgesses of this Incorporacon and above the age of 2j years have not taken the oath of a Burgess and therefore we desire Mr Maior to sumon them before him to take theire oathes

4. That the pavemt in the streete are broken and in many places out of repayre that the Bailifes shal take care to see them amended before the 29th day of March next or in default thereof to forfeit xjs.

5. That Minspitt well, Goosewell, the Draw Well in the markett street and the two draw wells in the ffryergate are at want of clensing therefore that the Bailifes doe cause them drest wthin fowerteen daies upon payne to forfeit xls.

6. William Werden jun for laying his dung nigh the schoole house to ye great annoyance of all that passe by And that he shall remove the same wthin fowerteen daies after notice given upon paine to forfeit for every weekes neglect vjs. viijd.

7. That Artillery is not used in this Towne according to ye forme of the statute in that case made and pvided

8. That the Assize of Ale and Bread is not observed and kept in this Towne according to the statute in that case made and pvided And wee desire Mr Maior to take this into his special case and consideracon.

9. That the Butts upon Spittall mosse are in great decay to ye priudice of Artillery and therefore wee finde that the now Bailifes of this Towne shall cause the same to be sufficiently repayred before the twenty fifth of March next.

10. That these psond following did not appeare at the last Cort Leet held for this Towne and therefore to pay for every of them the sumes to theire names affixed

11. Thomas Marton Aldrmen for laying his dung below ffrygates barrs to the great annoyance of George Woodhouse and that he shall remove the same wthin fowerteen daies after notice or els to forfeit for every weekes neglect vjs. viijd.

12. That there is neither Pillory nor Tumbrell within this Towne and that the now Bailifes shall erect and make the same accoring to the statute in that case made & pvided.

13. Edward Charnocke doth keep unlawfull gameing in his house, to the great injury of severall psons, by harbouring theire sonnes and servants at unlawfull times of the night. And doe therefore refer him to Mr Maior to bee punished according as the law hath required in that case. Also wee finde and prsent Thomas Burches and Thomas ffoole to be guilty of the like misdemeanors with the above said Edward Sharrocke and to bee pceeded against accordingly.

14. Mr Roger Sudelson for that he doth not maintain a yate and style at his horse mill end for want whereof many of the neighbors gardens are spoyled or in great danger to be spoyled with swyne, therefore he shal set a yate and style as formerly before the seacond of ffebruary next or els to forfeit for his neglect xxs.

15. John Higham for makeing a Tusle and drawing blood upon the body of Margret the wife of Edm: Walmesley and therefore to pay. vjs: viijd.

16. Margaret the wife of Edm: Walmesley for assaulting the body of John Higham and giveing him bad and provokeinge words in his owne house and therefore doe refer the busines to Mr Maior to punish her according to her offense.

17. Nicholas Watson doth much anoyance to John Hall by suffering Excrements and other dung to be conveyed into a channell runing through his house, that upon notice he shall forbeare the like or to forfeit for every offence hereafter iijs. iiijd.

18. Edward Osbaldeston hath erected a building upon the Townes land nigh the Almeshouse adjoyneing to ye way leading downe to Rible Bridge without the consent of the Towne, therefore doe refer him to be finde or psent as Mr Maior and his Counsell shal see cause.

19. Henry Graystocke doth nusance to the Towne by making a midding stood upon the marsh with his dung and rubidge and that he shal remove the same before the seacond day of ffebruary next upon payne to forfeit for every weeke after. iijs. iiijd.

20. That the foote Bridge betwixt Preston and Ashton upon the marsh wanteth rayles to the danger of all mens psons that passe over it, therefore that the now Bailifes of this Towne doe repayre theire parte of the said bridge wthin fowerteen daies after notice given.

21. Henry Balckburne for makeing a fray and draweing Blood upon the body of Ralph Woodhouse and therefore to pay vjs. viiijd.

22. That Thomas Shepheard hath done much damage to Jane Walmesley de Holehouse by cuting downe in the night a payre of doore cheekes to the great danger of her whole family therefore that hee shall sufficiently repayre the same witihn seaven daies after notice or to forfeit for his neglect xls.

23. William Hollinhurst of Penwortham for makeing an assault upon the body of William Woodward and therefore to pay iijs. iiijd.

24. Richard Sudell for harbouring the wife of Anthony Throughdon of Lancr therefore that shee shal be removed within ten daies after notice or the said Richard to pay for every month iijs. iiijd.

25. Henry Chorley for harbouring Giles Leeth his wife and daughter to be removed within ten daies after notice given or the said Henry Chorley to pay for every month after iijs. iiijd.

26. James Asheton and Thomas Ordes being house lookers appointed for ffryergate and also Richard Hodgkinson and Roger Rivington appointed for Churchgate that they have neglected to make theire Presentments to the Jury of the Leet according to theire office therefore to be fyned for theire negelct at the discrecon of Mr Maior.

27. That John Greenwood doth, contrary to the oath of a Burgesse suffer forreiners to buy and sell and cut cloath in his house therefore that hee shall hereafter not suffer any such abuses to the Towne to be done in his house upon payne of xls a time and that the offences by past shall be left to Mr Maior to be punished accordinge to the crime.

28. Rogr Myres for harbouring Butler? Cowborne his wife and family therefore that he remove them within ten daies after notice or to pay for every month after iijs. iiijd.

29. John Langton for harbouring Thomas Wilkinson his wife and children therefore that he remove them within ten daies after notice or to pay for every month after iijs. iiijd.
