Great Court Leet, held on the 22nd of October, 1658, before Evan Wall (Mayor), Oliver Shawe and John Sumpner (Bailiffs), and William Shawe (Steward of the Court).

Presentments:-

1. That the now Bailiffs shall put the Butts upon spittle Mosse in good repaire for ye use and Exercise of Artillery, accordinge to ye first prsentmt. of the Leete 7th May 1658.

2. That the Assize of bread and beare is (as wee conceive) much neglected, and that ye Officers sworne for that purpose may bee enquired of and instructed by Mr Maior.

3. That Mr Maior and his Counsell take care that Mr Morte may erect a barne in St Johns weend and yt ye fine imposed by many Leets heretofore, and yet unlevied (as wee suppose) may not surmount the value of ye decay.

4. That there are many young men above the adge 21 years are not sworne Burgesses and for neglect their duties in giveing obedience to the Officers sumons vizt James Wall, Rich: Mitton, Willm Cottam, Nich: Mitton

And that these hereafter named who have been sumoned to take their oathes have either neglected to appear, or refused to take their oathes, accordinge to the 7th prsentmt of the 30th March 1657, every of them to pay vjs. viij a piece.

5. The stallengers allowed by Mr Maior and Councell may not have Libty to the Moore and Marsh to turne catle to, or to Keepe comon Alehouses, wch we conceive a great prejudice to ye free Burgesses of this Burrogh, and desire that care may bee taken for the prvencon thereof and that or [other] Libtyes and freedomes may bee maintained.

6. That Mary Gradell on the Syke hill hath not repaired her house accordinge to ye 10 prsentmt. last Inquest and therefore ye fyne bee Levied accordingly.

7. That the way leadinge to Rible Bridge betwixt Salter house and swilbrook is in great decay and also ye Cawsey betwixt Jon. Twistletons and the Alms houses, that the Supvisors doe take some Course therein, or otherwise wee desire that the Maior and Counsell may order the Bailiffs may cause it done. Or howsoever they may thinke fittinge soe as all unnecessary charges may bee prsented for ye doeinge thereof.

8. Whereas there was a Barrelle of Beefe left in ye comon streete in ffryergate, which beinge disowned by ye supposed owners, John Clifton and George Birches, and noe one layinge clayme thereunto, And pte of wch said Beife was carried upp and downe the streete by doggs and swine, to ye great greefe of neighborringe Inhabitants, Wee therefore thinke fittinge yt ye Overseers for ye poors shall cause the remaindr thereof valued, wch is fittinge for mans meat, and ye same to distribute to ye poore Inhitants of this Burrogh as they may see cause. Pte of the said Beefe as before was valued by John Hodgkinsin, Christor Darwen, Tho. Comberall, and Henry Graddell at 10s.

9. That Thomas Martin, Jon. Marsh and Mr Edm: Werden shall sufficiently cause their ditches scowered alonge ye bottom of their crofts. That soe Roger Tomlinson may keepe ye Syke troughes dry, before ye first of Decembr next else to pay every one a peece vjs. viijd.

10. ___ Anderton sonne of John Anderton that he pulls down mens hedges and therefore to be punished at ye discresson of Mr Maior.

11. Mr Jon. Merry hath encroached at his new buildinge at his sellar stares 5 foote in bredth at ye east end, and 4 foote at ye west end, and 17 foote in length, therefore to be rented at ye discresson of Mr Maior & Councell.

12. Mr Willm Shawe hath incroached at his now buildinge at his celler stayre 5 foot in bredth and 5 foot and a half in length, and erected rayles 7 yards and half longe and 2 foot & 9 inches broad, therefore to him rented by Mr Maior and Councell.

13. Wm Werden, James Werden and William Charnocke that they gett sand in ye moore laine, to ye spoylinge of ye highway, and undermininge mens inclosures & therefore evy one to pay ijs a peece. and the said Willm Charnocke to fill up ye sand hole made by him at ye east end of ye towne before ye prme. Decembr next else to pay ijs vjd.

14. Willm Andland hath sett a paire of stayres or ladder upon ye townes wast, therefore to be rented by Mr Maior and Councell.

15. That the Bark weend, leadinge from St Johns weend to the ffryergaye barrs is spoiled and filled up by severall, vizt Willm Loxam, that carry there rubbish and soe causeth their barnes to bee over flowed and there goods spoiled, therefore if it bee a right way, the said Laine should bee repaired by ye supvizors, or otherwise the pties(parties) agree may take their remedy as they may see cause.

16. Roger Corles and Will. Helme, did make an affray and did both of them drawr blood of each other, and there fore both of them to pay iijs. iiijd. a peece.

17. Roger Corles did make an a fray with a Thomas Cowper and drawr blood of the said Cowper therefore Roger Corles to pay iijs. iiijd.

18. Roger Corles and John Kellett, for making a tustle, therefore Roger Corles to pay ijs. vjd. and John Kellett ijs. vjd.

19. That Mr Seth Mort, did make an affray and therefore to pay ijs. vjd.

20. These sevrall psons hereafter named are forrinors inmates and unnecessarie members, and unfitt to inhabitt in this Burrough to bee removed by Mr Maior and his officers, before ye xxth of January next, or otherwise ye harborer to pay xs unles they give security to Mr Maior for their removall, at tyme Mr Major appointe that soe wee have noe more stallengers, but if they or any of them shall not remove, or purchase such Liberty for Mr Maior as above, the harbourer shall forfeite and loose for evy month as such are not removed the some of vjs. viijd. a month.

21. Mr Willm Astley and Willam Woodward of Lancr salter did ye 27th 8br 1658 beinge on Winter faire did make a fray and therefore either to pay 40s a peece.

22. The said Willm Woodward for making a fray and strikinge one Thomas Whalley of Mosthead? near Lathom and there fore to pay xxxxs.

23. Jon. Singleton for takinge his horse from Jon. Comberall, beinge goeinge wth the said John Singletons horse to ye pinfold at 12 sevrall tymes therefore to pay for either offence ijs. vjd. a peece.

24. Ye said Jon. Singleton for makinge a tustle and strikinge the said John Comberall when hee rescued his horse, and therefore to pay ijs. vjd.

25. and ye said Jon Singleton for swearinge one oath iijs. iiijd.

26. Mrs Hodgkinson hath a stone waight wants fower ounce and half a stone weight wants fower ounce,

27. Willm Cottam hath a lead stone weight wants 2 ounce.

28. Mr Jon. Langtons Boake? will not equally balance unles nigh 4 ounce bee laydon, and also a lead weight wants ringe?, but hee saith hee never useth it.

29. Mr James Gorton hath a stone weight wants 2 ounces all wch wee desire Mr Maior wold be pleas'd to take speciall care of.

30. Wm Threlfall, Raph Kilshawe and Jon. Kilshawe doe sell wood and vessells, and therefore desire that care may be taken by Mr Maior and Councell for their removall, or otherwise to agree and compound with Mr Maior for their Libertyes.

31. Ann Huson and Ann Ingham doe constantly make middingsteeds at their doores in ye streete to ye great annoyance and shame to ye govmnt of this Burrogh, and therefore ye said Middens removed before ye 10th Decembr next else to bee severely punished by Mr Maior.
