Great Court Leet held on the 7th May, 1658, in the Moot Hall, before Edmund Werden (Mayor), Thomas Bostock and Roger Rivington (Bailiffs), and Evan Wall (Steward of the Court).

Presentments:-

1. The exercise of Artillery is not used or exercised within this Towne accordinge to the statute in such cases made and pvided, and the now Bailiffs of this Towne shall forthwith cause the butts to bee reapired and keepe them in good repaire, and shall set railes about them from [to prevent] Catle rubbinge upon them and pullinge them downe.

2. That the Assize of bread and Ale is not observed & kept, accordinge to the statute in that case made & prvided.

3. That Mr Maior shall Cause his Officers to try ye weights and measures within this Towne before ye 24th June next.

4. That both the Pinfolds are gone to decay and ruinated and that ye now Bailiffe doe repaire the same with breeks and other necessaries do before ye first of August next upon paine of xxs.

5. Mr Seth Mort has not errected and builded his barne, upon ye Townes Land in St. Johns weend accordinge to ye fifth prsentmnt of the Leet held March 30th 1657 and therefor forfeited his ffyne of 40s and that he shall build up the same before the first of August next on paine of xls.

6. These psons hereafter named beinge somoned, to make their Appearance at ye great Court Leete did Contrary to their Oath neglect to appeare to ye evile Example of othere; And wee doe amerce them every of them in ijs a piece.

7. That sevrall psons prsented in the 7th prsentmt of the last Leete, beinge free Burgesses, have not as yet taken ye oath of a Burgess accordinge to the Orders of this Towne, and that Mr. Maior at his first Leisure shall Call them before him to take them sworne, accordinge to the Customs of this Towne, and that evy one Makinge default, after notice, shall forfeit and pay 6s. viijd. as in the said recited prsentmt they are amerced.

8. That the prsentmt of the last Jurie of Inquest is not affeared. And wee desire that Mr Maior will Cause ye some to bee affeared with much speed & conventionaly may bee, that ye things may be done accordinge the to said Prsentmte or or otherwise the fynes Levied accordinge to the affearinge thereof.

9. That the now Bailiffs of this Towne, shall Cause the fish stones and streetes to be put in good repair before the first of August next. And also that they shall forthwith repaire ye east Moore yate upon paine of vjs. viijd.

10. Theise sevall psons hereafter named for the forestallinge of the Markett, by Buyinge of fish in the Markett, and takeinge the same to their houses and afterwards on the same day bringeth the said ffish soe bought by them, by pcels, from their said houses, and sellinge the same againe in the Markett, and therefore to bee fined at the discrecon of Mr Maior and his Councell vizt

Evan Huson, John Duckworth, Jo. Cowborne and Jennet the wife of John Harrison.

11. Richard Sumpner that hee has erected a porch at his house in the ffriergate contrary to an Agreemt lately made by the Maior and his Counsell. And therefore to bee fined for his Contempt herein, at the discrecon of Mr Maior & his Counsell.

12. George Woodhouse that hee hath not made lidds over his celler staires in ye ffryergate accordinge to an Ordr lately made by Mr Maior and his Counsell, and therefore for his contempt thereof, to bee fined at the discrecon of Mr Maior and his Counsell; And also we amerce that the said George Woodhouse shall pay for every month hereafter that hee shall neglect to make Lidds as aforesaid the some of 6s viijd.

13. Willm Threlfall, John Kilshawe, Raph Kilshawe and George Gray are forraigners and suffered to inhabit within this Towne, and to sell Wood and Wooden Vessells all ye weeke alonge, to the great Prejudice of other free Burgesses within this Towne. Wee doe therefore pnte and say that they shall forbeare to Trade till they have compounded with Mr Maior and his Counsell for their ffreedomes or bee stallanged, upon paine for evy of them to forfeit for evy offence the some of vis viijd.

14. These sevall psons hereafter named are fforaigners inmates and unnecessary members to inhabite within this Towne, and therefore to Compound or give Bond and bee stallanged, at ye discrecon of Mr Maior and his Councell or bee removed before the 24th of June next in paine for evy one harbouringe any such to forfeite the some of 6s 8d and evy month after warninge given the like some of 6s viijd.

15. That the last prsentmt of the last Leete concerninge swine hath beene neglected and therefore wee prste and say that the said prstmt shall bee observed upon paine of forfeit showne sett downe.

16. That John Ryley hath not agreed with Capt. Edward ffrance for his incroachment made by his garden Wall, accordinge to the Affearinge of the 45th prstmt of the Leete held the 2jth of October 1653 and therefore wee prmte and say that hee the said John Ryley shall agree with the said Capt ffrance accordinge to the Affearinge.

17. That John Barker at the North east end of his now Buildinge in the ffryer weend has encroached upon the Townes wast, but how farr wee are notable to judge and therefore now referr the Consideracon hereof to Mr Maior and his Councell.

18. Edward Charnocke and Henry ffisher made a tusle and therefore wee doe amerce them in vjs. viijd. a piece.

19. Lawrence Barnes, Robert Hesketh and Willm Eaves being forraigne Burgesses that they with their familyes doe now inhabit within this Towne, accordinge to Liberty given unto them in the fforth ordr of Mr Werdens Guild, and have not yet Compounded with the Towne accordinge to the Tenor of the said Ordr therefore wee prsent and say that they shall Compound accordinge to the said ordr.

20. That the highway between salter house and swillbrook is in great decay, and therefore the supervizors of the Highway to see the same sufficiently repaired before ye first of August next.
